Janet Gray received her B.A. (1974) in psychology from Simmons College in Boston and her M.S. (1978) and Ph.D. (1980) in biopsychology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She came to Vassar College as an NIH postdoctoral research fellow, working in the Biology Department. She joined the Psychology Department in 1983 and is currently Professor of Psychology and Chair. In addition to teaching courses in physiological psychology for the Psychology Department, she is an active participant in the interdisciplinary programs in Biopsychology, Women's Studies, and Science. Technology and Society (STS).
For many years, Ms. Gray’s primary research interest explored central and peripheral correlates of changes in food intake, body weight regulation and metabolic activity induced by ovarian hormones and antihormones, especially the antiestrogens. Over the past decade, her research has focused more on understanding the mechanisms by which the antiestrogens, especially tamoxifen, alter neural activity in hypothalamic and preoptic areas of the brain.
