Michele Tugade earned her B.A. from Vassar College (1995) and her M.A. (1998) and Ph.D. (2001) in Social Psychology from the University of Michigan. She then completed an NRSA Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (NIMH) in the Emotional Experience Laboratory at Boston College (2001 – 2004). She joined the Vassar College faculty in 2004 and teaches courses in social psychology and individual differences.

Professor Tugade's research focuses on positive emotions, emotional experience, and emotion regulation. She investigates the function of positive emotions in the coping process and the mechanisms that promote resilience to stress and adversity. Her research also examines the structure and dynamics of emotional experience and emotion regulation. Her program of research incorporates multiple research methodologies, including laboratory-based experiments, experience-sampling methodology, and psychophysiological measurement procedures. Her research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Mental Health.
